I am going to repair some minor rust through spots on a piece of pitted old sheet metal. It has been blasted and I'm going to use JB Weld. I have done this many times with good success on bare metal, but am curious as to which way is the best way...apply it directly the to bare metal or apply my epoxy primer first, and then fill the pits. I've never used JB over paint before, and I want to know if it will adhere. The metal is rough and pitted, so maybe it will adhere OK? Thanks

I would apply directly to the metal. It would seem to me the primer would let the J-B Weld lift long before the metal. It is just one less layer to worry about. { I have no basis for this just thinkin' out loud]. I am a J-B Weld lover.

Thanks Dr. I'll probably stick with plan "A". It's always worked for me in the past. I've always done the same with putty, by the way. Some guys swear you need to prime first, but I always did my putty work first, then primed over everything.

JB Weld is alright but anytime I just putty a hole with anything it eventually falls out. It wasn't until I started putting fiberglass cloth in the patch before it quit falling out.
