john deere thinner

Painting with John Deere Classic paint. What can I substitute for reducer as it says not to use lacquer thinner but naptha doesn't seem to want to spray well either.

It is probably a modified alkyd enamel. Best bet would be to use the reducer john deere paint recommends. You will have a lot less problems if you stay with the mfrs products.

There is kind of a rule with painting. If the paint job is important you use the same brand of solvent as the paint. These solvents are a blend of chemicals and the chemist at the paint company has come up with the best formula to thin the paint so it's better to use theirs. Sometimes when you substitute a solvent it screws with the integrity of the paint and may thin the paint alright but in turn causes the paint to fail years prematurely.

I'm glad you asked that question. I have a new can of Classic JD Green, and a new can of Naptha that I was gonna use for thinner. I guess I'll swing by the JD store and get the right stuff.

I use enamel reducer from a local auto parts store. Only use the John Deere thinner to clean up with.
