Sorta OT --Coating Rusty Galvanized Roof

Gents:

I need to mine the great wealth of experience found here. I've looked in the archives and I have seen various opinions but I need help to come to a conclusion.

My house has a large , steep, and very rusty 5-V Crimp galvanized, roof . It was coated with something like Aluma-Seal 11 years ago ; rust started showing up in year seven . In the archives, as a first step some recommend Rustoleum Rusty Red Primer , others recommend a phosphate wash , and others power washing . As a final coat many recommend the Aluma-Seal type paints , others recommend a good latex paint that is said to bake on , and there are various other recommendations .

I favor the latex approach because I have seen at least two old houses that have been made to look beautiful in this way . Would you guys please give me your views on the first and second steps and your views on the correct paints .

And one other question : Since the roof was coated with Aluma-Seal , if I go with latex will there be issues due to residue from the old paint.

Deeply obliged for any help.

Thanks , CNKS . But what are your views on the claims of these people?

Sorry ,CNKS . Hit "Enter " prematurely .

I'm guessing you think they are puffing? Really conflicted here about which way to go.

Thanks .

You sure have a mixed bag considering that a coating has already been applied. I would use the same product if you know exactly what was used. Otherwise I have good results with aluminum paint on rusty metal. It's ecconomicial, quick, requires little prep and reasonably long lasting. Pressure washing to remve dirt is usually a good idea with any paint project. Starting with metal that hasn't been coated previously, phosphurous wash is very effective before priming and coating. I have little confidence in latex covering rust.

I scanned part of it. I have used latex on gutters, etc, when I knew it wouldn't hold and it didn't. Perhaps it works if ALL the rust is removed and treated with some form of phosphoric acid. But, I consider latex is for wood. You can do what you want. I'm not going to study that whole website or advertisement, as the case may be.
