Is there a need to prime?

Old tractor 51 TO30 with old paint that I want to leave on and just to paint over it. I will be sanding and repairing the sheet metal and priming bare spots before painting but do I need to prime the engine and transmission areas when there is old paint? I am just spraying engine and transmission areas good with industrial degreaser and pressure washing before painting and wanting to know if this is satisfactory?

There is no reason to prime the old paint. The only place you need to prime is any place there is bare metal showing or a place you have used bondo. The engine degreaser is a good idea. It's real important you have the old paint free of any oils. It would also help as much as possible to scuff up the old paint with sandpaper or a wire brush.

hat's what I thought, just need reassuring.

A primer/sealer is always a good idea,
especially when your cover a mystery type
paint system. It'll help you see spots that can be leveled instead of seeing them in your shiny new paint.

If it were mine, I would. The primer will adhere to the existing paint better and the new paint will hold better. Plus it will save you paint in the long run by giving you a uniform material for your color. A good epoxy primer is what I would suggest. You can reduce it down about 10% and it will go on nice and smooth.
