Body Filler

I want to redo the fenders for my Farmall M, they are in good shape except for some rust pocking. I am going to sand blast them first and use a quality filler but my question is, Do I prime them first and then apply the filler or apply the filler on bare metal before the prime coat? Thanks!

I will be using an epoxy primer. I will be using a body filler. The pits are to deep for a high build primer.

I prefer to epoxy them first . You never know when circumstances arise that prevent you from getting right at them and getting everything filled/sanded before flash rust starts to set in. If you can get right at them then forget it. On a tractor it would probably never be a problem anyway.

If it were me I would prime with epoxy primer first and then use the body filler. The epoxy primer will seal out any moisture that might start it rusting again. Otherwise the metal can rust under the filler and have it coming off. If you are using a different primer other than epoxy I would probably start with the filler and then prime after you get it leveled.

If the rust pits are quite deep the sand blast might not get all the rust even though it looks like it to the eye.

I agree, I would prime before the filler. If your pitting isn't too bad, you can use a primer that is designed to build thickness. Load it up with several layer, then let it cure well. Follow up with block sanding and you might need little or no filler.

2X the acid wash. You can never be sure of getting all of the rust out of pits, even by sandblasting. I use Rust Mort by SEM expensive but works great.
