Hi. Several years back I did a total restoration of a 1961 JD 4010 stripping the entire tractor down to bare metal, PPG Epoxy Primer and then PPG Omni paint. Came out terrific....very durable too which is important as it is a working tractor.
Fast forward to now....I'm working on my IH 1466 and doing some needed repairs, updates, etc and plan on giving her a new coating of paint. The paint on her is not flaking (peeling) off but is faded. Plan on doing some sanding and lots of cleaning use wax/degreaser, etc. BUT, I am not planning on sanding down to bare metal as I did on the 4010. So for the areas that are not down to bare metal, should I still hit them with an epoxy primer? Just want to make sure that I get good adhesion and I realize that cleaning, degreasing, wax removal, etc is key but assuming that is done, will epoxy primer on all be helpful or is it a waste of time/money.
Thoughts?
