61-4010

Hi. Several years back I did a total restoration of a 1961 JD 4010 stripping the entire tractor down to bare metal, PPG Epoxy Primer and then PPG Omni paint. Came out terrific....very durable too which is important as it is a working tractor.

Fast forward to now....I'm working on my IH 1466 and doing some needed repairs, updates, etc and plan on giving her a new coating of paint. The paint on her is not flaking (peeling) off but is faded. Plan on doing some sanding and lots of cleaning use wax/degreaser, etc. BUT, I am not planning on sanding down to bare metal as I did on the 4010. So for the areas that are not down to bare metal, should I still hit them with an epoxy primer? Just want to make sure that I get good adhesion and I realize that cleaning, degreasing, wax removal, etc is key but assuming that is done, will epoxy primer on all be helpful or is it a waste of time/money.

Thoughts?

Correction to the above....I used PPG Concept not Omni. Dang stuff was expensive as heck....but man it is great paint! Plan on doing the same for the 1466.

i would not waste money on the epoxy primer. use a good 2k powerfill primer, we use diamont products here at the shop, here is a link to dp26

As long as the paint is intact all that is needed is to thoroughly clean any grease or oils off the paint and scuff sand it. I would recommend washing the tractor a couple times with Krud Kutter Gloss Off sold by Sherwin Williams. Then if there was ever any wax put on the tractor wash it again with a product like Dupont Prep-Sol Solvent. Primer is only needed on places where there is raw metal showing.

I agree with Glennster in that you need to put something over it,probably not epoxy tho. That faded paint is very porous and pigment and binder resins are broken down from sun/weather. If not removing it you at least need to sand (220 wet) and apply two heavy coats of catylized primer surfacer and then sand with 400 and paint. If you just paint over the old paint and have some primer spots also, you will get a difference in shine/hold-out from the two surfaces. If not right away ,you will within a few weeks.
