muratic acid and rust

(quoted from post at 04:15:50 04/26/15) Any one tried spraying a rusty tractor with acid instead of wire wheeling or sand blasting?

That would be a really bad idea. Just leaving a container of that acid uncovered in the shop will generate a film of rust on everything in there.

If you can stand the language (my friend pete) on youtube tells how to use muriatic acid to treat rust on a car roof and neutralize it. He is under three names I think. one id diy ?? been a while since I watched his stuff. He is a top notch body man but I think his language is disgusting.

I expect that it would work pretty fast at eating the rust, but as the others have said you have to neutralize it so you could be left with too much alkali after the neutralizing. What you want is phosphoric acid, because it turns the rust into inert iron phosphate. lately I have been using Rust Mort by SEMS. It doesn't really eat rust like a stronger acid will but it does a great job of converting to black iron phosphate. It costs $30.00 a quart but it is watery thin so it brushes out a long ways and just a thin coat of the clear liquid turns any rust black. It shows you the little specs that you couldn't see after sandblasting.
