clear coat?

Have several pieces of equipment that have faded over time. They're way too difficult to hand sand or prepare for paint as we would usually do a tractor or car. Pieces like a disk or cultivator. The paint is intact just faded and flat. What I want to do is clear coat them to bring back that stored in shed look. What product could I use? I don't want to hand prep all the areas so could I use a chemical prep for the bond?

Most paint that has faded that much has also changed color, ie red will turn pink etc. Spraying clear on that paint will just make it shine it will NOT change the color back to the original rich tone. Blues turn light blue , greens turn bluish etc. the cheap pigments degrade and sun bleach out. Clear just makes it "shiney" fade or shiney pink. It won't turn it back "red" .

You sound like my wife . She varnished the wood floor without sanding first and couldn't figure out why it looked bad.

I have seen JD tractors that were real shiney from a clear coat. I expect just clear lacquer. It would be on the rubber and muffler and everywhere. It would be peeling off in a year or two and in four years look worse than original weathered. The dealers apparently do them with no prep so the coating doesn't adhere very well.

Wipe the paint down with mineral spirits and see what it looks like. If it restores the color to your liking then a clear coat would help. If not then repainting is the only answer. If it's not the factory paint then you might have difficulty clear coating it. The solvents in the clear coat could adversely affect the paint if it's enamel. Anyway the first step would be to thoroughly clean the oils and grease off the tractor. I would start with purple power and a power washer. Then follow with a wax and grease remover such as Dupont Prepsol Solvent. Then wet sand the tractor with 400 grit sandpaper and wash clean and allow to dry. Then it is ready to clear coat. The most durable would be a urethane clear coat available at places that sell automotive paint.
