supplied air respirators

I see supplied air respirators on Ebay quite often for sale pretty cheap, as far as they go. Are these units "good" or should I shop locally at a painting supply store? Is there a preferred brand?

Another question, which probably seems ridiculously simple: If I am going to paint a tractor, where do I put the compressor unit? For example if I am painting outdoors, should the compressor go inside the shop? Or if I am inside, put the compressor outside? I'm thinking about paint drift here.

I'd appreciate any input from folks more familiar with these units.

thanks,
Al

If you search the archives you will find a lot of good info. I have a breathe cool (I think that is what it is called) and love it. Make sure to get at least a 50' hose. Anything shorter and it will be more of a bother than it is worth. When I paint inside I put it outside and when I paint outside I put up wind/around a corner up wind wherever the paint won't get to it. I will never go back to a respirator.

I got to short of hose when I got mine and sucked in paint fumes, get a 50' hose and put it UPWIND in fresh air.

We just bought a Breathcool system from here: http://www.turbineproducts.com/respiratory-protection/

It is awesome. We got a hood for sandblasting, a hood for painting (which I haven't tried yet) and a standard mask. We did buy a 25' garden hose to stretch out the system to 50'. Sandblasting is now not so bad- the hood doesn't fog up and you don't end up with sand in your hair and ears. You don't have paint in your nose when you are done painting. We probably should have bought one a long time ago. It was around $600 with everything.
