wet sandpaper

Question? Do you soak the sand paper or just dip in water before sanding? I know, stupid question but I have not done wet sanding! Dick

I use a bucket of soapy water. I wet the area and the paper. I keep dipping the paper so the water flushes the sanding debri away so the paper keeps cutting the primer.

just dunk the paper in the water. we use car wash soap in with the water, it rinses clean unlike some dish soaps. also, get a large sponge, dunk that also and hold it above the area you are sanding so it flushes the debris away. keeps the paper from clogging.

No stupid questions in painting . There are so many things to go wrong any advice is welcomed. Even sanding is sort of an art. X patterns , sweeping hand sideways so fingers don't place uneven pressure. Long sanding blocks on large flat areas. Guide coats .Slight soapy water. It all helps .

Thanks everyone. Just trying to paint my own tractor. Paint shops all wanted one of my legs and arms and my grandkids to paint my hood and fenders!!

Every year I wet-sand the hood / grill / gas tank on my Farmall H, re-spray with Case-IH spray cans, and byn ow I've got good at it. Looks fantastic, wins awards in Christmas parades.

I was taught years ago before people were schooled and smart that the idea of wet sanding was to flush all grit off and from under the sandpaper to keep from adding scratches rather than removing them. Adding plenty of water while sanding with even light pressure using a block. The guy that showed me had a rubber tip on a hose in one hand and the sanding block in the other with the hose slung over his shoulder to keep it off the car but said a sponge or rag was just as good as long as water was moving under the sand paper. I see on the TV shows people sanding with a spray bottle.
