I see that imron changed from dupont to axalta. Has anyone used it since? Is it still the same as when it was dupont? I know that it isnt as good as back in the day but just wondering if it is still a good durable paint. Thanks

the new version of imron is reformulated from the old original version. it is still a polyurethane. it is predominately used in aircraft now. if they use it on planes, it must still be pretty good.

Glen were you doing body work when the first came out with Imron? The dupont rep. told us they tested it in develpment by sand blasting 55 gal. drun, painting it and blowing up with dynamite. Also planes will keep cleaner from flying thru the weather. I do know a large fertilizer plant south of me paints all of their spreaders with it. We used it on several fire trucks I was envolved with the building of.

yup, used imron in the early '70's . it was a 3 part, color, activator and the accelerator. back then a charcoal respirator was a luxury. imron tastes like bubble gum.overspray got everywhere, sticky as all get out. it was an ok paint, but i liked shooting ppg back then. tried the first of the centauri when itcame out, was not impressed at all. after about 6 months the shine would die down and you had to re-buff it. then dupont came out with a gloss kit to add to the paint to eliminate the problems. about 30 bucks for the kit. i switched over to sherwin williams and had good results. nw we shoot diamont base clear here at the shop, and am very happy with it. roberlo has come out with some really nice performance clears, and we switched over to their body fillers. really nice to work with, pretty much pin hole free.

I started in body work 1959 and bondo only out a couple yrs before. I got trained real quick on how to lead. I still have several bars and the tallow and paddles. In the 1980s started building canopies on C8000 Ford 3208 Cat chassis for fire trucks. Only used bondo on the top. I used to grind and sand a lot lead and asbestos. Used to asbestos sheet and powder(mix with water) to protect ares from the heat when leading. Would much rather use pick tool and body file & no filler.

I'm a DuPont (Axalta) rep.....DuPont sold our division and sold everything associated with it, everyy plant, warehouse, employee, trade secret. so everything is exactly as it was and Imron today has gone thru many revisions, mostly because of VOC regulation and the new formulations are better then the past in every way and we still sell it mainly to fleet guys like Mac truck
