blasting media

Sand works good .. but be carefull around bearings and seals .. also sand gets into everything ... so if theres a hole and gets in
I use SODA around bearings and seals and such .. it's more expense ....
So I used sand where there is just sheet metal or cast ..
Hope this helps .... mark

Be careful on sheet metal. It's easy to warp it. Most guys say it's the heat but I think it's more the peening action of the sand. Back the nozzle away and move faster. Sand will blow right by seals and get into bearings. I only blast when disassembled and clean insides with detergent and hot water.

I used sand for the first time on my most recent project and I am a bit disappointed with the finished paint. Sand left a super clean surface but I should have applied a heavier coat of primer. The final result was a pretty rough surface after paint. Looks good but still rough.

I have wire wheeled everything prior to that and also did some on this project and I like final results much better. However like I said this was my first attempt using sand. I think soda is the way to go.

For you guys who know, how about walnut shell mix?
I see it at Harbor Freight. I am trying to sort out the best way to prep my 8N chassis for implement grade paint.

Black Beauty or Black Diamond . It is a slag product from masonary supply stores. It has much sharper edges than sand.

I've used crushed recycled glass available in two grades, fine & medium grit on sheet metal w/o warping or leaving a rough surface. After blasting, a DA with 220 quickly eliminates any roughness.

I tried those shells from hf. Very
disappointing. I took them out and took
them back. They might be okay to clean
aluminum or brass, but they did nothing
for iron.

In regards to the original post, I never
blast anything on the tractor. If I want
to blast it, I take it off. Have had many
bad experiences with sand getting into
places it shouldn't be even after I
quadruple wrapped things in duct tape.
Anything on the main part that isn't taken
off is stripped and wire wheeled.

Thanks Sportie,
Google doesn't find this for me. Do you have a source or a link?
Thanks,
Rick

Wolfie,
I find national sources when I search for this material. Do you have any tips for finding it locally, such as how you sourced it, that might help?
Thanks,
Rick
