oil removal

I have an engine block and misc parts (Case SO Tractor engine ) that I want to paint. This is a new overhaul. Naturally there is some oil residue on the block and parts. What should I use to get the residue off so the paint will stick?

if its a clean block with assembly oil on it, not dried on grease dirt and gunk, just use lacquer thinner. load your spray gun with it, turn the air pattern in and open the fluid valve wide so you shoot a round spot pattern. hose the block down to wash all the oil off. then use wax and grease remover in the spray gun, like prep sol, finyl wash, pre-cleano ect.

There are also some powerfull water based de-greasers out there. I found what is call "Tri-Power" concentrated de-greaser at my local industrial cleaning supply. It costs about $25 a gallon but it is very strong stuff. I mix it about 50/50 and spray it on with a spray bottle, let it soak for a while and wipe it off. It works very well, the only bad side is that you have to rinse it off before painting. I like it because there are no fumes to go boom!

It's just a small block . Clean block with assembly oil on it. If I wipe it down with lacqure thinner do I need to use something else on the Lacquer thinner?

i would follow up with a wax and grease remover after the thinner. that way you know the block is clean.

I have always started with dish soap and a scrub brush after wire cup wheel. I am just cheap I guess but it seems to work. Then use the thinner on the block just before painting applied with the spray gun.
