degreasing tractors

anyone have any sugestions on how to remove old built up grease an grimm to prep for paint with out having an expensive high power steam cleaner

Spray down with two cans of degreaser than power wash if you can use hot water, I run a garden hose from inside the house to get hot water for laundry sink.

The general consensus here, as this comes up pretty frequently, is commercial oven cleaner by the gallon. It is very caustic. Another good suggestion that comes up sometimes is before you get it wet and dripping is to crawl under with screwdriver and putty knife and scrape off the heavy stuff in the out of the way places. The oven cleaner takes time to penetrate deep so get the thick stuff out of the way, spray oven cleaner on with a spray bottle, let it sit for ten minutes, then flush the loosened stuff off. I always use my hot water pressure sprayer, but if you get the heavy stuff off and you have a trailer you could take it to the car wash.

soap degreasers like purple stuff and an electric pressure washer have always gotten me thru. sometimes a lil hand work with a scrapper..

There just ain't no good way. But by the time you've tried everything, every drill, sander, rag, sponge, spray, steel wool, bronze wool, spray goop, your wife's spray goop, your worthless brother-in-laws spray goop, ...................you're done!

FBH44, try what pretty much everyone agrees on, cheap oven cleaner in gallons.

(quoted from post at 21:12:16 11/21/14) Where do we get oven cleaner in gallons? Sam's?

Probably Sam's or Restaurant Depot if you have them, or a paper supply. Any place that supplies to restaurants.

I just rented a steam Jenny the other week to do an 8n. Picked it up in the afternoon and had it back first thing the next morning, so they only charged me for a half a day. Had 62 years of caked on grease cleaned off in about an hour. Best $72 I've spent in a long time.

I would stay away from oven cleaner. It has lye in it. While it will clean it pretty good, it's hard to get all the lye off the item to be painted. If there is residue, it will blister your paint later, especially on aluminum parts. A good degreaser works better for me. I like to use a pressure washer with it.

Spent a couple of hours degreasing a Farmall M. I knocked the build up off with a scraper, sprayed the tractor down with Simple Green and let it set for awhile. Then used the pressure washer to clean the rest of the grease & grime off. This took about three tries, but the engine/chassis is ready to paint.

Man these guys pretty well put that into perspective, the only thing I would add is they have on the market now some simple green and oxy clean in a spray bottle. It is not as good as the old caustic stuff but it is a lot easier on the lawn/asphalt/shop floor/chromosomes.
Like Sisyphus I have my own rock to push. But I will have to wait until spring.

I have had very good luck using a cleaner called "MEAN GREEN" I get from Wal Mart or The Dollar Store for $5.00 a gallon. Spray it on full strength and it dissolves oil and grease. Then I use the pressure washer on it.
