Epoxy Paint over Oil Primer (Rustoleum)

Hello, I have been reading over the forums a lot as I work on my 1949 Farmall cub. I have been using Rustoleum oil based primer to spray parts as I strip them down to bare metal. This past weekend when I was speaking with a friend about painting with Epoxy paint, he recommended that I strip all of my parts again of the oil based primer, and reapply epoxy primer.

Is this really necessary? or will Epoxy paint work fine of the oil based primer that have already used?

The oil base is inferior to the epoxy, how long do you ant this to last and what type of service will it be in? if long term and/or outdoor work then strip it and use the expoxy

I would save the money and paint it with a quaulity auto paint mixed to IH red color unless you painting it to take to shows.

i wouldntput epoxy over rustoleum. use whatever products your color coat recommends. many products are not compatible with other paint types. you will open a can of worms when you get a reaction from different materials.

OK thank you - Yeah I decided last night I am not going to epoxy. I am going see what CASE IH has and or look into Valspar Implement paint.

Has anyone primed with Rustoleum? How did yours turn out?

Mine will not be a show tractor, and it will not be kept outside, so I am ok with using an oil based paint

I painted a Farmall H 14 years ago. I used paint from Case-IH. The tractor is a working tractor, but it is never left outside. It looks every bit as good today as when it was freshly painted, with the exception of a few minor scratches. I DID NOT use the hardener.

There are good reports on Rustoleum automotive paints. About four times the cost in rattle cans but can be bought by the quart.

Some on ebay but you can google for other places to buy.

Eastman and Summit Racing has good paints as well.
Both have free tec advise.
rustoleum automotive paint colors

They also makes rustoleum farm paint in brand matched colors. The do fade out side some in a coupla years. About the same as Majic.
you can get a look at some on ebay also.

If spraying a primer just to prevent rust then when it is time for the good paint I would scuff sand all the spray can primer off those parts. From the metal up through the paint you need integrity in each layer of paint. A good 2k primer too.
