Paint stenciles

Any one ever made stenciles to paint letters
and numbers on equipment namely New Idea spreaders. I am about finished with a ground
up rebuild of a 12A and would love to put the
lettering on as original as possible. I will use it but like things to look original besides
we only live 12 miles from were it was built.

stencils are a little tough, you get bleed out along the letter edges. fineline tape works good, but tedious to apply. if you have a sign shop nearby, they can make a set of vinyl cut decals pretty reasonable, and just stick em on.

I have ink stenciled thousands of cardboard cartons with an ink brush. It took a light touch to keep the letters and numbers from bleeding making it blurry. Using that concept I stenciled my disk with a rattle can by misting it over the stencil and giving it a minute or so between misting until it was solid. I did not have a bleeding problem. I thought I had a closer pic but didn't find it.

Dave, I have made stencils and painted with them on my MN barge wagons. It is time consuming but well worth it. First I made chalk rubbings of the original letters and then took them to a photo copy machine to make copies to use for the stencils. This is where I would use a pencil and ruler to measure and trace around the letters to get the exact size and shape. Next I would lay the copy paper over tagboard/poster board and used a Xacto knife to cut out my stencils.
Once I had my stencils made, you can buy a spray adhesive. Spray lightly on the back of the stencils, actually wait a few seconds, 10-20, until the adhesive is tacky, before sticking onto the area to be painted. I used my finger to make sure the edges were secure before painting. I taped/papered around the stencil while using a rattle can to apply the made paint. As long as you are stenciling to wood you will have a bit of overspray. I took a model car brush or detail brush to touch up the edges after the paint had dried.
Time consuming....yes! But if you want the original look, it is the way to go!
