Has anybody used PPG single stage urethane paint?

Don't know what you are painting but you are at the top of the list of both quality and price. I have used PPG top drawer stuff since 1985 and it has served me very well. The Mopar dealership that I managed was all PPG when I was there , when I left they instantly went to Dupont and got a mixing station. Funny thing is they still went to CarQuest and bought PPG at least once a week because Dupont wouldn't match color. You can't do any better than PPG imo.

This is PPG single stage paint. It sprayed on nicely and looks good.

I use concept on just about everything, aside from sheet metal. I haven't found anything I like better. PS I still clear over my concept. Makes the parts even more slick and shiny. Somtimes I'll mix the dcc and clear together. I just finished up a 2-year project, using mostly concept.

Beautiful tractors!

How close were you able to get to the original Ford Medium Gray and Vermilion red? Can you share the color codes?
Rick

Sorry can't help with PPG opinion..I used Centari for the awhile until I couldn't afford it and then went to SW 3rd dimension single stage urethane enamel.
It has severed me well and it is a fraction of the cost of the Centari.
Beautiful tractors all...after all that work on the JD"s do you also make them work ?
I just finished a 2 year restoration on a much smaller Ford 1958 861 Diesel and the first time I put her to work it actually hurt.
Instead of paying attention to the work I was doing, I was concentrating more on being careful not to bump / brush her up against anything.

DScott, that is one of the nicest resto jobs I have seen. Kudos to you!

I am working on a low to mid budget clean up of my '51 8N.

I have a good sheet metal guy who will do a nice job on the hood and fenders but I am deciding on one of two colors in Concept single stage urethane, either PPG 32675 or PPG 31657.

For the engine/tranny/hydraulics/diff I think I will go with Tisco TP310 in alkyd enamel. I will be using chemical strip and pressure wash and am working on the thought that the alkyd will not be as sensitive to the oil from the engine ant tranny. And will look good and wear well.

Thoughts guys? Thank you for the comments and the comments to come. I will have to take pics!

Rick

I've sprayed a lot of Concept. It's very good paint. Unlike a lot of others where you get a lot mixing clear in the color,Concept is 100% color. I sprayed this car a few years ago and it's Concept on it. No clear.

Sure, I used:

Delfleet Essential polyurethane

Ford Red 71654

Ford Grey 3315

A friend of mine that specializes in Fords (and has some really nice ones) gave me these paint numbers. I found a NOS rear light bracket/ license plate bracket that was still in the package from Ford and it matched this grey exactly so I didn't even paint it. The red is bright and glossy.
Thanks for the compliments! I really like the color scheme on these little 8Ns. It's the only non Deere tractor I have and it belonged to my grandfather.

I used PPG's single stage Omni paint in 2006 on my Troy Bilt tiller. Still looks good even though I still use it. Hal

DScott, I am painting an 860 and really like your colors. Can you post the PPG color codes you used on this one?

Over the years I have tried them all, lacquer was the only paint available when I started painting.
PPG by far the best, but spendy.

Sprayed crossfire for years
.
I now get my paint from TCPGlobal and I swear its PPG but much cheaper. They also carry a primer called POR, fills great and sands easily.

Here it is:

Delfleet Essential polyurethane
Ford Red 71654
Ford Grey 3315

Thanks Duane. Are you using the Restoration Shop brand from TCP and what are the red and gray colors you use from them?

I DScott, I really like your restoration this is awesome! I'm about to buy the paint for mine and I would like to know how many gallons you needed to paint both color ? Thanks a lot

Finally finished my 860 complete restoration. This tractor has been on the family ranch since 1957 and is completely stock with 99% original parts. I appreciate all the assistance of this forum.

Absolutely stunning eye candy there, Mr. DScott! Did you spray on a clear coat over the Delfleet Essential Polyurethane, and if so, what was it?

Look like you did a nice job, too, Troutpeak. What colors and paint brand did you go with? I'd like to see a before pic and find out about your metal prep on the engine before you sprayed, and you went about the whole process.

I'm getting ready to restore an 860 that has been resprayed once with what I believe is probably the original Vermillion Red--that sort of orange-ish cherry red, and the Ford Medium Grey, which I call a "green grey". However, there are some hard-to-get-to parts on my 860 that are deeper red, more like DScott's 8N pics. It makes me wonder what the true original red on my 1955 860 was and should be. Thank for posting!
