Killing Rust

About two years ago, I cabinet blasted and primed several parts and set them aside in a protected area. Looking them over a couple of days ago, I discovered some of the cast iron pieces had started to rust through the primer. I always blast everything to bare metal and have had no problems with steel parts, but the cast iron tends to re-rust.......especially where there was rust before. Obviously, blasting to bare metal and applying rust inhibiting primer won"t do it. How do I kill this rust and what type of primer should I use?

On cast I use a asid on them before primer seals out the rust ! Tractor supply sells it in spray bottles works great !

Epoxy primer. Before topcoating scuff/sand it and apply another coat. Epoxy is waterproof, no moisture will penetrate it.

I agree with the phosphoric acid. It converts the rust to inert iron phosphate. you just follow the instructions for cleaning, application, and rinsing, and those microscopic particles of rust down in the pits will be converted instead of going to work and growing as soon as you cover them up with epoxy primer or rust inhibiting primer.

(quoted from post at 07:47:17 08/09/14) I guess you just brush it on..........do you wash or wipe it off or leave it alone? Who has the best price on it? Thanks!

You can brush it or what I do is use a spray bottle. You will want a respirator and eye protection if spraying. You can just apply it and let dry, wash it, or wipe it off. When I wash it off I will reapply a mist coat and then wipe dry. Some times you will get a white powder that forms when it dries. I use a scotch brite pad to remove the powder before painting or reapply Ospho.

As for best price I would check local suppliers and online. There are many different brands on the market also.
