Paint stipping with a grinder?

EDIT...title should read "stripping".....EDIT sorry

I have read in the forum that some people are doing some paint stripping with a grinder and some sort of attachment on it. Could someone help me out and explain this more.

Are we talking big right angle grinders or the small 41/2 inch ones. What are the disks or pads or whatever that is being used. Is the method fairly fast, or slow as h***?

Could someone post pictures of the disks, wheels, or pads that they are using, or a link to the product so I know what I am looking for.

The wire wheels don't work so well for me they clean but dont strip paint well.

Thanks Brian

use the 3m paint stripper disks. they look kind of like waffle pads. we run them in air grinders here at the shop. do noot use a grinder with 16 or 36 grit. you gouge the metal and heat warp it. here is a link to the 3m disks. you can also use the 3 inch scotchbrite roloc pads on an air grinder.
poke here

I have stripped one running gear a year for the past 8 years - 8 gears. I use a wire wheel on my 4-1/2" angle grinder to get the big stuff and the wire wheel usually leaves the metal fairly smooth with patches of paint left on the metal. Then I apply a coat of "Citristrip stripping gel" - a paint stripper - on the remaining paint. I let it sit for about an hour and use a putty knife and a coarse stripping pad held in my hand with protective gloves to rub the stripper and paint off. It usually takes two coats to completely remove all paint. Citristrip is an odorless paint stripper that can be used indoors. I use it inside my garage to keep the outdoor breeze from drying out the stripper. I buy the stripper at my local Ace Hardware for about $13 for a quart. A quart will do at least 2 running gears. I clean up the gear with paint thinner and eventually a degreaser prior to painting.

Depending on how crazy I want to get (and paint condition) I will go at it 1 of two ways.

1. I often use sprayable paint stripper from HD. Spray it on, let it crinkle and dry. Then take a wire wheel (not the crimped style, but the twisted style) and hit it. The paint normally flies off.

2. Second option is just using a twisted wire wheel on the angle grinder. Takes paint off in a hurry but won't hurt metal. The crimped wheels aren't worth the time or money. They seem to only polish the paint that is stuck on.

ive done that when im painting something like a trailer that has poor paint where it still has any, our local carquest has a 4 1/2 inch stripping pad that goes on the grinder, you go thru a few of them if what your painting has a large area but it will take the paint off fast, if you are doing sheet metal like on a body you will need to sand the area you stripped or you will see the scratches especially if your painting with spray cans, if your usin a regular paint gun your primer coat should cover these up

I use an angle grinder with a polycarbonate wheel on it. They work great. I've never used the brand on the link but a similar one I get at walmart. http://www.bunnings.com.au/josco-100mm-strip-it-disc_p6332817
