I have been doing some research on painting and came across the following two sites. Some basic information on and definitions that I found very informative and thought others might also.

1K coatings v/s 2K coatings

I am getting close to painting my 1950 Ford 8N, still not sure if iI am going to do it or hire it done. I really would like to do it myself but I don't have a supplied air system and I don't think I would be satisfied with a paint without a hardener.

A lot of guys go off the deep end with paint.
Buy products that are beyond their skill level to apply, or pay
someone Thousands to paint a tractor worth Hundreds -
figuratively speaking.
Buy some Valspar Tractor and Impliment Enamel and the
hardener for it. a gallon is $65.
Paint outside.
EZ.
Looks and lasts great.

I agree with UD. Unless you are doing a trailer queen, the enamel works great. You can apply with a cheap gravity feed gun. Easy cleanup, particularly if you get the throw away paint hoppers that go on top of the gun. You can actually brush on the cast iron and it will look fine.

This site and nnalert's have it for under $45 a gallon. TSC if you want a brick and mortar store. Do use the hardener. Do the primer the same...enamel with hardener.

I appreciate your replies. I have about got all the mechanical work done on my tractor and trying to put together a plan to paint it. It is a Ford 8N. I am leaning toward taking all the sheet metal to a body shop and have it done. I want it to look good and be done with a good paint with hardener. I am leery about using hardener (ISO's) on the red portions without the proper protective equipment.
The tractor will not be a "trailer queen", I may take it to a show or two, it will be stored inside and at the most mow some grass or maybe rake some hay. It will not be an everyday worker,
Have either of you painted one without a hardener, how did it turn out and hold up. What type of protective equipment did you use when you used a hardener (ISO's)
Thanks again,

I understand your health concern. I used a mask with filter system. Not very pricey, and came in handy when cleaning too. Hint...if you can smell solvents or paint with the mask on...it's not protecting you.

Don't skip the hardener. The paint will be softer and won't hold up as well. Additionally, the hardener will improve dry time and allow for a second coat sooner.

Outdoors and with breathing protection...you will be fine.

Do you have an air compressor?
