Painting wheels and not tires--

Painting a JD "60" Tires need masked off or is there another way? Thought about grease on the tire edge by the rim, does this work? Or, is it a pain to get off when done? Any suggestions appreciated. Breaking the beads is out for me. Thanks

It's easier to mask properly than to try to get grease right up to rim but not on rim. Get some good grade automotive tape (3M green etc) and plenty of light and just mask it correctly. May have to razor blade a few mold pips off so tape will lay down. If one doesn't have the patience to do this then one might want to re-think working on tractors ?lol

I used spray cans, so it worked for me to cutout a aluminum license plate in the contour of the rim, slide it along just inside the rim as I sprayed. Worked Ok for me. I wouldn't use grease, sounds like it would be a mess.

When I did my wheels I used masking tape. Use good tape and buy narrow tape for the first row because it will form around the wheel better. My .02 cents

Take tires off rims. Only way to do it right.

I have taken some fairly heavy, but not corrugated, cardboard, and cut an edge of it to mach the arc of the rim. I then hold it and slide it around as i paint.

I haven't tried it but I was told by someone who does restoration that they used dishwashing liquid. Brush it on let it dry somewhat wash it off after the paint dries. May want to do a test run first.

I used Crisco instead of grease. It"s cheaper, and washes right off when your done. I used a thin piece of cardboard to keep,it off the rim, and applied it with a brush. I had no residual paint on the tires.

I use petroleum jelly on the tires when I paint the wheels. It really helps the tires come back to life too. Just my .02

Glad to hear this Petroleum jelly method. I found an ancient square tin of petroleum jelly -- about 1.5 quarts worth and I've been wondering for years how I could use it up. :D

My rears are unmounted but I want to leave the rubber on the fronts and do them the same color as the rears -- right now they are a bright white that someone did. At least there will hardly be any prep -- no rust.

Cheers,
Terry
