OT: High Heat Paint

Getting ready to paint a new BBQ smoker and fire box. This is all new, no old paint except what was on the piece of 20 inch tubing for the smoker. Looks like a black rust preventive paint, not the direct burial coating.

I know sand blasting would be the best, but that's not in the plan for now, maybe this winter. Meanwhile, any practical cleaning methods? I've flap disc ground all the welds, knocked off the weld beads, etc.

Any favorite rattle can paints? How about primer? I've got to get this ready for the 4th, could go back and repaint it off season, but for now?

I have had good results with Rustoleum High Temp flat black. I have tried several paints and coatings with poor results.
I always sandblast before painting.

I always search out the VHT 1200 degree stuff . But the Rustoleum flat black BBQ paint is a pretty good product. I have used the flat black and the silver with good results. If it is from an auto parts store and is some off brand avoid it. The thing with the flat black is any later repaints blend right in to the first paint job.

I dic what I thought was a perfect job on my muffler, sand-blasting down to white metal, paint with some sort of high-temp aluminum paint. However every few years the edges start showing a little rust, althouhg it's always kept indoors. I just wire brush it away and touch up again. Point being, it may not turn out to be the perfect end-all ever-lasting job a person expects. No big deal, to me.
