JD B Painting

Hi all,

Looking for answers from folks that have painted tractors. I am new to painting tractors. I have a 1943 JD B tractor that am doing a full restore. Basically used for parades and ocassional shows. The tractor is being completely stripped and bead blasted to raw cast iron.

I want a good durable paint that will hold up for many years. I don't think I want to deal with clear coat but just a good strong paint that has the clear or shine built in.

Let me know what you guys thing?

Thank you!

Brandon

PPG, DuPont, Sherwin Williams and other major brands of URETHANE. They all have 2 or 3 lines that differ greatly in price, I use PPG Omni, which is the "cheaper" urethane.

I agree with what CNKS said but will add, there is no such thing as a built in shine. The paints have the capability to shine like glass. The painter and his equipment must be able to take advantage of that. Flawless smooth preparation (on sheet metal), follow directions to get you in the ballpark and then PRACTICE to fine tune. Hopefully you are spraying it in pieces because that way you can use each piece as practice for the next. For example, spray the air filter can or other smooth pieces first (after the cast parts naturally) and practice yourself up and fine tune your equipment and procedures up so that by the time you get to the main sheetmetal/grills etc, you are happy with the results. If you aren't happy with the little stuff then find out why BEFORE you make yourself unhappy with the rest. Doing it over sucks and is expensive and never turns out as good as the first time. My pet peve is , "you get one chance at a good paint job". Happy painting!.RB

I painted my Troy Bilt tiller with PPG's Omni in 2006. It still looks good. It never sits outside
and I painted my garden tractor in 2010 using Dupont's and New Holland's acrylic enamel. I used an epoxy primer then sprayed a surfacer over the primer. Hal

Here are a couple tractors I painted using single stage urethanes:

I painted this Ford 8N with PPG urethane and it turned out good. Sprayed on good and high gloss.

I painted this JD Model A using Sherman Williams Urethane and it was pretty easy to work with and is really high gloss.

I painted all mine with John Deere green paint sold by John Deere. Good paint at a decent price too.

I painted my B about 13 years ago with John Deere "classic green" and I am very happy with it. I even painted a lot of the cast parts with a brush with very good results. I use this tractor and take it to shows and parades.
