repainting enamel job

I have a pair of Allis B's that were partially restored a few years back. They are different colors of orange. One was painted with QFF and the other with TSC, both enamel with hardener. Both of them appear to have been painted in stages, so they now are each a couple different colors. Neither of the brands of paint is still available. The paint is well adhered except in areas that I will be stripping anyways.

I'd like to get them totally covered and both the same color. Not show tractors so I'll probably go back with cheap enamel with hardener. After I do my spot work can I just scuff with a red pad and shoot them?

I would use a good grade of paint or not bother painting them. We called that cheap paint whale oil. Hal

you can scuff it and re-shoot it, should not be a problem. use a wax and degreaser like a prep sol aftter all the cleaning and preping, just before spraying. do not shoot a lacquer base primer, it will cause the enamel to lift. also, dont prep with lacquer thinner.

alkyd over adheered alkyd will stick fine once cleaned and surface prepped a bit. Keep in mind ultimate age, composition and 'health' of paint underneath will control lifespan of top coat. IE.. if lower level paint peels for some resonl.. it will do so new paint on top or not.

still.. for a worker and rust prevention.. yep. power washing.. light scuff and you can shoot another 35$ gallon of paint on her and have 1 color and no metal seeing water / rust.

You can also use lacquer thinner to scuff the paint.
I use it in a pump up garden sprayer and squirt it all over.
It really degreases well and with a brush you can get into most of the crevasses.
Use drip pan underneath to catch the runn off.
I use it as a final prep just before painting.
If you spray too much it will loosen/soften old paint so play with it a bit and see how it works.

I would scotch brite it, then wipe down with lacquer thinner before painting. The paint will not stick if oil on it.

I have also cleaned off with brake clean and followed up with lacquer thinner wipe down.
