what to clearcoat

I'm repainting a wd45 with Omni paint. What do I clear coat and what don't I clear coat? I know the sheet metal gets it, but what about the engine, cast, rims, etc? What do you do with the parts that aren't cleared? How are tractors prepared at the factory to protect the paint?

First of all Omni makes both base cote and single stage paint. If you are using base cote then you HAVE to clear all of it. If using single stage then it's your option to clear any or all. Clear on solid color only gives you more UV protection, nothing else. As far as more shine, that comes from experience. I really don't understand your last question.

What B-maniac says. For me I use both base clear and single stage urethane on the same tractor. The shade of the two paints are slightly different, but they blend in so that they are not noticeable. I use base clear on the sheet metal and the chassis. I complete disassemble the tractor, that is I remove all the parts. The large ones are clear coated, the smaller ones normally use single stage. But, what you do is your decision. As to your last question, if this is what you mean--the new tractors are painted by a totally different painting process than we can do. The antique tractors were painted with alkyd enamel or paint developed in the 30's. Other than heat drying the paint, they did nothing to protect it, so it faded in a couple of years if left outside.
