Getting ready to paint my 4000. Is it better to pull the rubber off the rims and paint or leave it on and just do a good masking job? Rims are in good condition so all they need is some light sanding to knock off some surface rust. Going to be my first paint job so bear with me and more questions to come.
Saw all different brands of paint available in the blue and grey. What do you guys recommend? Valspar, Tisco, Rte. 55, New Holland, etc....

Mask em.I take a piece of cardboard, cut one side to
match the contour of the wheel.Follow the paint gun
around the wheel. You will be surprised how well that
works.

I use the same procedure as Red. Quick and Dirty, and it enables you to even get the backside of the little lip.

I used Crisco to keep the paint off the tires of wheels I have
painted. I use a piece of thin cardboard to keep it off the edge of
the rim when I apply it with a paint brush. It goes on fast, and is
easy to wash off when your done. There is no paint left on the
rubber when your done. I think its cheaper, and faster than tape.
Also you get more consistent coverage of the whole tire. Im no
expert, but it worked for me.

Never tried it on big tires but for garden tractor tires I use a piece of aluminum flashing coil ( the stuff used around the doors and windows on your house) 6 inches wide I think, wrap it around the rim and clamp it with a plastic clamp.

I used a piece of cardboard to cover the tires on my garden tractor in 2010. Good enough for in the garden. Hal

Took a license plate, aluminum, and cut it to shape of the rim. Sanded the rim, sprayed red primer, then sprayed Rustoleum"s Hammered Aluminum spray cans. All the runs drips errors of my wonderful technique look jsut like galvanizing. Turned out great.

Sounds like a good technique. It would be the first galvanized look rim that I have seen.

I use masking tape to mask the edge of the tire by the rim. I trim trash bags to go around the tire from rim on one side to the other side. When I mask the tire, I catch the edge of the trash bag too with the masking tape. When you are done the tire is completely protected from overspray by the tape and plastic bag. Then you can spray away as much as you like with no worries.
