How to repair bent hood

I have a 580K Case Backhoe that has a bent hood. I accidentally
started raising the bucket while hood was open,Oops.
I am not sure how to remove the hood in order to repair it. Also
what is the best way to get the crease out? It is awfully thick metal, I
tried beating it with a sledge hammer but it didn't to anything.

I would take the hood off and take it to a car wash and soak it down with a engine degreaser first and clean the gunk off. Then depending on what you have hammer the dent out the best you can. I often hammer against a steel I beam I have. Nothing else available there is always a concrete floor or driveway. Once you get the dents hammered as best as you can prime it with epoxy primer. Then fill what is left with bondo and sand. More than likely you will have to apply bondo a couple of times before you get it level. Once you think you have it prime it again with epoxy primer. When that dries prime it with gray filler primer. Sand it as best as you can and then prime it with either red or black filler primer. Then sand it and the two different colors of primer will show you the high and low spots you may have missed. Each time you prime change colors of primer. Do a overkill on filler primer. There will likely be defects in your work that you can't see until you start putting the finish paint on. Once you get the last coat of primer on and you are ready to go with the topcoat then wet sand the primer with 400 grit paper, dry and your good to go.

First, stop beating on it with a sledge hammer. You are stretching the metal, and it will make it all the more difficult to repair. With heavier gauge steel, you are going to need heat to relax the metal to work it. You may be better off to take it to a local body shop and have them work the dent out for you.

I am not a body man. But in a similar situation I borrowed a clamp made for gripping sheet metal from a friend. Attach one end of the hood to something solid, and the clamp to the dented area. Pull with a hoist or jack (I used a loader but I don't think that's recommended) opposite of how it was crushed. Mine pulled out enough that I was able to hammer the rest out. I am not sure if I could have hammered the whole thing out without pulling it back into shape first.

Never beat on it, you will stretch and deform the metal. You might be better off to find a used hood at this point.
