Engine tins

Hi all,

here my problem, while the engine in my skid loader was being rebuilt the shop used a CAT YELLOW paint on the block and so forth, I don"t know if it was hi temp or not. while the engine was being worked on I decided to paint the rest of the machine, I used a different yellow. when I got the engine back the two looked stupid next to one another, I didn"t want to repaint the loader CAT YELLOW TO MATCH THE ENGINE, TOO MUCH INVOLVED. So I shot the engine with black gloss enamel . now I really don"t like how dark the engine compartment is, so my question is can I remove the tins and spray them yellow to match the loader? im sure the heat from the engine will burn off the block paint but what about the tins? any advice?

Your going to have trouble covering black with yellow. It's going to take a bunch of coats. What kind of black did you use anyway? Was it a high temp paint? It might be easier in the long run to strip all the paint off the engine and start over. At least when you are done you know what is on it. If the original yellow peals it will take it all off. I really don't believe a bunch of coats of engine enamel is going to stay. You would probably have to wait a month between coats to have a chance.

I paint valve covers for cars with regular enamal all the time. They don't get hot enough to require a high temp paint. I use 1-Shot lettering high quality enamel.

The paint is fairly new. Take the tins off and spray them with oven cleaner. It will take the layers off pretty easy. That's what I use. You may have to do it several times as it takes off one layer per time.

If I remember right isn't this an air cooled engine like they put on balers and such? I've rebuilt air cooled VW engines for about 25 years. I always use regular black paint on all of the tins. It stays just fine. The tins get warm but they always have air movement on the back so they don't bake off. The cylinder heads/cooling fins routinely run 350 degrees so even if you use 500 degree paint you should be ok.
