What grit sand paper?

I sent several parts out to the sandblaser for blast and epoxy prime. The primer has a pretty rough finish to it and I need to sand it down smooth before I put additional coats of primer down before paint. I will use a DA for the flat spots and small blocks in the tight areas. What grit should I use for sanding this down smooth before I get ready for paint?

True epoxy does not have a rough finish and is not sandable. It also cannot be used as a high build primer, if that is what you mean. Some people call their primer epoxy when it either isn't or is mixed with something else at the factory and is called epoxy. Anyway sandable primer, whatever it is, should be sanded with 400 grit to get a smooth finish, particularly for the last coat.

My guess is the metal has been roughened by the sand blasting or has previously been pitted with rust. Anyway an epoxy primer has a recoat window of three days or less and if it's been longer than that it will need to be scuffed with sandpaper before you use a filler primer for bonding purposes. The filler primer will sand easily and will level the surface. Since epoxy primer is difficult to sand I would use 220 grit paper. Before you purchase the filler primer be sure to find out what brand of epoxy primer was used in order to make sure the filler primer is compatable. An automotive paint store will know which is the right product. I continue using 220 paper until the last coat of filler primer when I change to 400 grit in preparation for paint.

Its not from the blasting, ive sanded some down already and it sands down smooth. I had some 180 grit on hand at the shop, that seems to be about right for knocking it down. Ill step up before my last primer coat.
