I agree. They also market an extra fine product (almost like a powder) that is great for blasting aluminum without leaving a significant profile. I've used that in the past for cleaning up aluminum engine valve covers before clearcoating. It has a low free silica content so it is safer that sand from a health standpoint. It also doesn't break down as quickly as sand and can be reused more effectively - good for recycling in a blast cabinet.

Health wise it is a way better product because it is silica free[ as in no Silicosis disease].Besides cutting better. Another is Black Diamond --same thing very close price. I get it at mason supply but unless it is sandblasting I have no idea what masons do with it. I try to capture on a tarp and resift and put back in the blaster. It is coal slag and works ten times better than play sand. Good stuff.

That's aluminum oxide. Same abrasive as on emery cloth. Don't use it on aluminum, it would be more like a saw. I don't know if it would be any safer than silica.

After I read what Rod posted I'm not so sure about the silica free. It says 41% silicon oxide. 21% aluminum oxide lower percentages of iron oxides and other oxides. Okay don't get ANY in your lungs. It works because it has many more sharp corners on each particle than play sand. I remember years ago having a sandblasting party one afternoon at a guys house and all the play sand dust was blowing onto his neighbors wash that was hung out.The two girls that lived there weren't home but I imagine there clothes were itchy by the time we got done blasting all day covering the laundry in dust. The mission comes first.

Our local Black Beauty vendor was (maybe still is, haven't bought any for a while) located on the premises of a electric company coal fired power plant. You'd drive in there past the security gate, then down a winding slag road through a moonscape with huge piles of coal and slag everywhere, slag being what Black Beauty is, to a little building where they bagged and sold it. If people hadn't been willing to buy the stuff I'm sure they would have given the give the stuff away since it's just what's left over after they burn the coal.

I often wonder what they did with the stuff they couldn't sell, since they clearly had enough to media blast the entire state several times over.
