etching primer

how does etching primer differ from regular metal primer ,also can it be painted over alone or does it have to be top coated with another material before painting

yes it can be directly painted over, just check tech data for any applicable time window for getting back on it or whether it will need a little scuff. It has an etching acid in it that will make it bond to smooth unsanded metal such as a new body panel or hot rolled steel which is slick. Any thing other than that, epoxy is better way to go. Still has a re-coat window of time though.

The etching primer just has phosphoric acid and zinc in it. The self contained acid just allows the zinc to bond to the surface of the metal better. The primer has no waterproofing qualities like epoxy primers though. A small nick in the paint to the metal will allow rust to spread out from the nick under the paint. With an epoxy primer the rust is contained at the nick.
