What can you paint on old 5V roofing over rust. I need something that can go on in one or two coats OR something to prime with that can be painted over with another color. Any help? I appreciate it.

The 5V roofing is galvanized which is more difficult to paint anyway. The surface has an oily surface with most paints have difficulty adhering to. It also contains zinc which reacts badly to oil based paints. Then like showcrop has mentioned if you paint over the rust it will accelerate the rusting process. The only way to have any long term success is to thoroughly clean the rust off as well as any remaining oil and the white rust galvanized gets before it fails completely. Then prime with a water based primer such as kilz II and then paint with the exterior paint of your choice.

that's almost a goner. rusty galv roof tin is just not a good paint candidate. I have done so on chicken coops using asphalt fence paint. the old style that was like tar that you mix with mineral spirits before painting. etc.

I got the idea from work. we install galv drainage culverty pipes and you can get asphalt coated galv metal pipes for more corosion resistance. the asphalt coating is pretty much just a tar-ish paint. does stick pretty good.. looks like 'but' though..

depending on what you are doing.. that's probably not an option due to looks.

good luck..

It is on an old house. Visible from the road.
I guess I thought there was a Rustoleum type product that could be put on the rust then paint over that.
Either way, will have to wait for better weather to start.
