Sand Blasting Tires

My son is restoring a 1956 Case 300 for the Delo Restoration project his tractor has new tires on it but they are old and have minor cracking. He was wondering if it would damage them if he sand blasted them from a distance to get rid of the sun burnt rubber. Thanks in advance

I bet he would have to get very close to get anything off a tire. The rubber softens the strike of the grains so that not much happens.

Personnaly I wouldn"t do it. I would think it would leave rough spots and not the smooth look he is probably trying to acheive. You might check Miller Tire in Ohio as they have several product to "restore" tires.

Think of the tire as a loaf of bread. Once you break through the crust you are dealing with an entirely different surface. That and what showcrop said about the sand just bouncing off. { Although I have never tried to sandblast a tire]. Did you see Worlds Fastest Indian where Burt Munro fills up the tire cracks with shoe polish to pass tech inspection.

I doubt you will have much luck. Friend of mine manufactures Tombstones. Solid granite. They cut a template from rubber and glue on the stone. They then use a sandblaster to cut the letters, pictures, etc. Cuts the stone perfectly, but has no affect on the rubber.

I agree with showcrop. Years ago I sandblasted wheels that had tires on them that I didn't care about sand just bounced off the rubber you could not tell the tires where sandblasted. This is just my experience my tires could have been a lot older or harder rubber.

I agree...get some tire paint from Miller Tire. You mix it 50/50 with water and goes a long way and seems to last indefinitely.

Tire black by miller tire is sold cheaper right here on YT MAG! I bought a quart first and liked it so i bought a pail. Didn't wash off in the rains and didn't rub off on my hands later......

Over the years I have tried to Explain here a time or two of an accidental discovery I made.
I sandblast with a power washer and a sand attachment for the power washer. Keeps the dirt down. Imagine the power of the two in one and without the giant air compressor.
Doing rusty old rims on a tractor. The tires where thirty years old and looked like new when finished. Required minimal time on tires and did No damage. Like new I swear. Also the tires are now so clean that you can get masking tape to stick for painting. Really.
