Painting engine parts

Got my block and head back from the machine shop. The shop painted them cast grey, I guess to keep them from rusting. My question is, can I put primer over this or should I get all the cast grey paint off first?

I would say that it is a primer that they put on it. You could call them and ask what type of coating they put on it.

Never heard of cast gray before. It is well worth your while to find out exactly what it is and then ask.
