3 options to choose from.

1.gravity feed
2.syphon feed
3.syphon feed (bigger with pressure pot and gun separated from pot by long hose)
i thought i had it figured out till i saw these diff types. im sure there isnt that huge of a difference is there? Any input on preference or major difference besides the obvious?
on a different thought,i bought everything else i needed paint etc.

There is significantly less waste and quicker refill with gravity. I believe that they even have disposable liners for the gravity feed units.

Can you even buy a siphon feed gun ? The only reason you need that is because spraying flake clogs a gravity feed gun. Nobody sprays flake on a tractor ,even a custom tractor. I think if you look at new guns you will see gravity feed. If you get with the newer technology you will save paint.

depends on what you are painting / how much painting you do.

each has a pro/con.

syphon guns, as stated.. waste paint inthe form of overspray.. and they eat air. ont he flip side.. they are one of the easiest guns to use for a beginner.

hvlp lay out paint while conserving air.

pressure pots really lay out the paint.. just have to be good with control

gravity feed are almost as easy to use as syphon.. and are great for out of position shooting.

I have a couple of each.. including a small 4oz touch up gun for small parts.

clean your gun good. even a cheap one can make a decent paint job. takes technique and good cleaning.

Having used all three of those arrangements, here's my assessment:

Gravity feed - Easiest for cleaning is a big plus. Having the weight of the paint (full sized gun) in my gun hand and the center of gravity located above my hand seems unnatural; I don't like it. That's not a noticeable issue for my gravity spot gun with the small cup. Make sure it has a cup cover that can be fully secured. Having the cover fall off and dumping most of the paint when painting at up angles is not a pleasant experience. I found that out the hard way.

Syphon feed - Old arrangement. Harder cleaning than gravity feed. Still have the weight in gun hand though it feels better balanced than gravity feed. Nothing really positive to say about it. It works, but I haven"t used that arrangement in many years.

Pressure feed w/remote cup - Hardest to clean. More capacity (2qts) for larger jobs w/o stopping to refill. All position means ease in painting completely upside down or at otherwise difficult angles or long stretches. Lightest for gun hand as no paint weight at the gun. Fun to use, IMO.

I'm with Rod on this, as the pressure feed remote pot outfit offers a few advantages. One is that all you have in your hand is the gun itself , lot less weight and perfect balance and control. Second is you can set the pot on the floor or hang it somewhere and it stays upright for complete paint usage all while allowing you to spray straight up or any angle you want. They are simple to operate,re-build, clean and adjust to any type product you want to spray out of it. I have made a living with the old 1 qt syphon guns and love them but they won't spray uphill very long and for tractors and hanging parts etc that is what you need. A good one will allow you to turn the paint/air/pattern down enough to paint a bolt head or open enough to spray a 12" band and everything in between. My syphon guns don't get much action anymore since about all I do is tractor /implement stuff and the 2 qt pressure pot/remote gun is my choice. It does take a little more volume of solvent to clean them/hoses up but well worth it. Just make sure you have a good load to paint before you start.

thank you. you guys have been more than helpfull. im paint a case 830 (831c). prob not till spring tho,ive got afew small leaks to fix and an overhaul to do first.it was my grandpas tractor and i want to have it done before him n grams get back from fla this spring.
he is 90 this spring,he has done so much for his country (army airborn ww2) the guy would give you the shirt off his back, and a positive kick in the backside to go with the shirt. i work on atv's motorcycles etc for a living and he always calls me the dentist because i use latex gloves lol. long overdue story short he means the world to me and i want him to have a nice tractor to put around on.......god knows he will

wife got me a nice small gravity that the cup mounts on the side so you can rotate it to paint upside down or any angel

I have several hvlp spray guns you need a good compressor as they use a lot of air. I also have an old siphon Devilbiss gun I bought used. I like it the best.

There's not many of those WW2 vets left. I was in the Army during the Korean War. I was with the 82nd Airborne Div. Hal

That's a good picture. Two of my Army buddies died in 2001. One said he could run 50 miles and both smoked like a smoke stack. Hal
