I"m slowly restoring a 44 John deere B. I plastic filled, epoxy primed(Omni), high build primed small tin pieces like the gear cover on the side and the valve cover in the recoat window and put on the shelf for a couple months. I now started sanding the high build with 400 grit and got a nice smooth surface but broke through on a couple corners. My question is, if I shoot epoxy again to cover the bare spots with epoxy will it lay out smooth enough for topcoat? Or do I have to shoot with high build after epoxy again? I would like to bolt them on and epoxy over them when I prime the rest of the tractor but afraid to loose the smooth surface with the epoxy.

You really need to use high build only on the sheet metal. The other pieces usually are good enough with just epoxy, unless you are an absolute perfectionist. In your case, though just give it one coat of epoxy over the high build, it will look ok.
