Very dumb question on primer

I"ve never really done a lot of painting in the past, and when I have I"ve used Direct To Metal paint. I"m considering trying some acrylic enamel and primering a piece that I"m working on. Here"s the dumb question.. if it"s an extended time (a few weeks) after primer is applied before I"ll be able to paint it, does the primer need to be sanded for the paint to stick? I"ve heard yes and no depending on who I ask. Can some of you help me here? Thanks.

simple answer is YES. Some epoxy primers have a 3 to 7 day window of opportunity for direct top coating but nothing for 2 weeks or longer.
