Primer with a brush?

Getting ready to use primer on a vintage John Deere. Can a decent job be completed by using a brush and some sanding? Many stories about the danger of spraying? Need not end with a perfect job.

A local auto body shop told me I could get a good looking paint job using a brush if I added Penetrol, a Flood product, to my oil based paint. I did and I was very pleased with the result. The directions are on the can and are easy to follow. I have added this product to my paint and over the past 5 years have painted 6 running gears including the wheels with a brush. I bought the Penetrol at my local Ace Hardware. Here's a website where you can research the product.

You can do a little better with a foam brush on the flat parts. I don't know how you will get into all the little nooks and crannies though

When I was a small kid my mother painted our 1936 Chevy using a paint brush with the bristles wrapped with cloth diaper material. I remember a few years later when dad traded it on a 49 Chevy the dealer could not believe it was brush painted. I never tried it myself.
