D 17 paint scheme ?

I have a series one D 17 made in 1958 that I am redoing. Where can I find a picture of this tractor that is painted properly-that is correct for this D17? It is a wide front end model.

Just be sure to paint the starter and genny orange, and the grill cream-white and you will be good.

(quoted from post at 19:27:17 12/16/13) you sure about that? Look at the sales brochures and
you will see black starters

Well, I looked through five pages on ebay and the only black ones that I saw were on the newer tractors where the whole engine was black. I think that the only people that ever painted starters black were the starter repair shops who weren't about to try to stock everyone's color. The factories assembled pretty much all of it then sprayed. Then added already painted seat, sheet metal wiring, carb-governor linkage, and radiator.

In the pictures I have seen of series one D17's, the grills vary a.black, b.cream, and c. AC orange. Also the rims have been a.cream, b.AC orange or c. silver outer part/AC orange center part. Would like it to be as close to original as possible, but if I can't come up with something that can be validated will just paint it to my liking. Thanks for the help.

What you have to do is look at how the manufacturing process went. When the subject of wheels comes up here the general consensus seems to be that the wheels came from the manufacturer to the tractor factory with good silver paint on them, so back then as now they all left them that color and just mounted the tires and bolted them on after the chassis was painted. One poster here insists that Farmall used galvanized rims. I suppose they could have specced them that way but it doesn't seem likely. All of D series that I have seen have a cream grill. Another point is the satin black dash which of course many manufacturers were doing at the time.

Post this question on the Allis-Chalmers section or on the Unofficial Allis-Chalmers site along with the serial number as there is some variation depending on the year...ie. the first couple of years used the black bar grill, etc. Kip

I notice that you specify 1958 so I'm quite sure this tractor should have a Persian Orange 1 mesh grill with the heavy bars painted black. Your wheel centers should also be PO 1 with silver rims front and back. The Series 2 D models were the first ones to use the cream wheels and grill mesh. These early 2-tone tractors were also the first ones to be painted Persian orange 2. Kip

Letter series-up Farmalls had galvanized rims until the late 50's or more. IH did not specify the color, just that the rims be corrosion resistant. IH and Allis, probably others did not make their own rims. I think that IH and Allis had the same supplier. As to IH I have owned a 41, 47, 48, 2-50's, 2-53's, 55, and 2-58's, all rims were galvanized under the repaints or when not painted, not sure when IH went to painted rims.

I agree that they probably sprayed any and all of
the tractor orange typically

Well, obviously the generator for this had been to the shop for repair before the tractor went out for pictures, LOL.
