Alternatives to Imron

I've got about five tractors that need to be painted, and even though I might be too old of a dog to learn new tricks, I'm attempting to learn to paint. I have a turbine HVLP system from TP tolls and I got to where I could do an almost adequate job painting with enamel. Then a friend suggested I try Imron.
To say the least it hasn't gone well. I am now the king of orange peel. I talked to my friend and he said that Imnron isn't the easiest thing to paint with and does tend to orange peel. Also said it's about the most toxic paint out there. He suggested trying PPG Industrial. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Also, can I paint it over the Imron if I sand it smooth?

Imron is the toughest paint I know of. It was used on aircraft. You can paint right over the Imron if it has cured, but it wont be easy to sand. PPG industrial is ok paint. If it was a show tractor I might suggest something better but if its a working tractor PPG industrial or Fleet paint is fine.

No question Imron is tough, but I have found that with my limited skill I can't do a good job with it. I was hoping to find a PPG or other polyurethane that might not have as steep a learning curve.

I had a car painted by a reputable body shop and it wasn't long and the orange peel appeared. I took the car back and they redid the car, stripping all the paint off using paint remover. I didn't have any more paint problems. Hal
PS: They let me use a truck of theirs while redoing my car.

I used PPG's Omni paint on my Troy Bilt tiller in 2006. It still looks good even though I've used it a lot and it's sheltered. Hal

I have never used Imron and know nothing about your turbine system but PPG doesn't have a learning curve--just follow their instructions and spray. HVLP is simple. You can use high dollar Concept urethane or the lower dollar Omni. Both have to have hardener. The person said Imron was toxic is because it also uses hardener and needs supplied air to protect your lungs.

I shot a Lot of the imron when it came out in the 70's. It was a good product, but really bad for you. The old respirators were just basically a dust mask. Worse yet, when you added the accellerator. the new formula imron elites are also good paints , and again they use the activator, and an optional accelerator. Its expensive. You can stick with the enamel, or shoot a single stage urethane like napas crossfire, or go to a base clear system. Btw imron thru a respirator tastes like bazooka bubble gum. I wont shoot imron again.

Buy Dupont Nason Fast dry machinery paint. Its an acrylic enamel that is very reasonably priced. I did a 3010 with it this year and it turned out great.

I have one of these units http://www.tptools.com/TP-Tools-HVLP-Turbine-Paint-Systems.html
I can do a decent job with plane old enamel, but this Imron has kicked my butt.
I think I'm going to try PPG Concept

I'll second DuPont Nason. I used it to paint buses. Very durable and looks good after 10 years even if not shedded.

I ordered a huge fiber glass shower back in the 70s. When I got it uncrated it was the wrong color, the place where I bought it had gone out of business when I tried to return it. The color was terrible so I painted it with Imron. Imron was the easiest paint I ever painted with, of course it has been changed a lot since the 70s. Anyway that shower looks like a brand new one today. It was originally a great paint and the most expensive back then.
