I"ve been reading quite a bit on paint. I"m more confused than befOre I started. my project is a 61 farmall 340. I"m wanting to have a paint finish that will look clean and don"t want to die while painting it. I was thinking on going to ih house and getting their paint. I try getting ideas online but I"ve never heard of the paint y"all use and then when numbers and letters get thrown in the mix I"m even more confused. I see where you can"t just use anyone"s primer and then go buy a gallon of paint from wherever and just start painting. can someone point me in the direction I need to go? By the way the tractor Is in great shape no major rust or dents. thanks

For a first time painter who is not willing to spend several hundred dollars on respiratory safety equipment and a lot of time learning, I'd recommend going with paint from the dealer, avoid all hardeners and strictly follow the topcoat can label as to any thinning, primer, application, etc. Plus, practice, practice, practice - on an old car hood or something. Don't use your tractor as your first experience as you may be disappointed with the result. This assumes you already have paint spraying equipment. If not, you're stuck with a brush unless you want to spend a lot more for equipment - or use rattle cans. I recommend a brush over rattle cans.

ok thanks. I was thinking on getting a hvlp. I have a bud who painted cars in the past that's gonna help me out but I do have an old beater out here I can practice on. we've rattle canned a 706 ih and a 350ih. they look decent but this one has sentimental value and want to make it right. would a clear coat be necessary?

If you were planning to get spray equipment fine. Paint recommendation would be the same though. No to the clearcoat. As far as I know, dealer paint is not intended to be cleared. Unless a recommended clear is mentioned on the topcoat can label, which I doubt, I wouldn't consider it. Not much to be gained anyway by clearing a gloss enamel. Good prep and decent application of a dealer paint (alkyd/modified alkyd enamel) can yield a nice glossy surface. Kept shedded to minimize fading and avoiding gasoline spills, it can look nice and last a long time.

I use and recommend that you use I H 2150 red. Have used it for a long time with very good results.A very easy to use paint. Has held up well. I have not used I H thinner, because I had J D thinner on hand. I think it is the same thing. No prob with either one. clint
