Repairing my JD 140 Fiberglass Hood

Hello, I would like some thoughts on how to repair my Fiberglass Hood.
The hood has a crack on the front, ( Not a big crack ) and a couple of the bolt holes that hold the hood on are in need of repair.
I have never worked with Fiberglass and I would be open for suggestions about working with it.
I do not have a heated barn or garage, guessing the temp should be a reasonable temp when working with fiberglass.
Any special type of sand paper needed?
Thanks, Dave.

assuming you will be using a polyester resin, there is waxed and un waxed. unwaaxed is used in builing laminated layers without grinding between layers. boat hulls, mold making ect. most local stores sell waxed resin. it has a wax in it that floats up during the curing process to the surface is "dry" to the touch. it requires sanding or grinding to add sucessive layers. you will need resin and hardener, and either matte or cloth. the matte is a random hair vs cloth which is woven. mix in disposable paper cups and apply with an acid brush. depending on the temp, you can have 10-15 minutes of work time. clean up is done with acetone. grind the damaged area and cut a patch. brush on a layer of activated resin, apply the cloth over the area and brush on more resin. eliminate all the air bubbles. sometimes a bondo spreader can be used as a squeegee to get the bubbles out. let it harden and then apply the same to the back side. if you need a thicker layer, sand or grind the surface and apply another layer. normal sandpaper works fine. wear a dust mask and gloves. dont breath the dust. if you get in on your skin, the dust itches like crazy.

Hi Glennster, thanks for the information.
Well, this is all new to me so I will need to learn all I can before I jump into this project.
I will do some more research on fiberglass work.
Thanks, Dave

There are pages and pages of this on youtube. All I know is you have to have fibers in the resin or it has no strength at all and it can start a fire in the garbage can if too much catalyst is mixed in. Coarser papers on disc sanders and can be topped off with plastic filler to get small flaws out. It is very versatile I have cut fiberglass motorcycles fenders in half and made wider with it but I made a cardboard dam to have something to work against. Like machine shop stuff youtube is your friend.

Hello dr sportster, thanks for the reply and information.
Well, youtube is a great idea which I never thought of.
I will check that out today.
Again, thanks, Dave.
