Painting the muffler/manifold

I"m on my second full restoration. Last one I just used a high temp paint out of a can to paint the muffler and manifold with no primer. I wasn"t happy how it turned out. Can I use primer/top coat on those two parts the same as I do on my sheet metal? Is it worth using the high temp paint at all? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
 
I paint mufflers with just high temp ceramic spray paint. I sand it down and clean it with a cleaner and spray it. You let it dry and then bake it on to muffler as directed by directions.
 
I had my manifold sand-blasted down to white metal first, then painted with hi-temp paint. HOlds up well.
 

Check the specs, but I am pretty sure that there are no primers for temps as high as exhausts get. Be aware that factory original was usually manifold same as the rest of the tractor and it just burned off, while the muffler was Aluminized. I prefer barbecue black on the manifold and high heat aluminum paint on the muffler.
 
I sandblast mine and paint it all with JD muffler paint, comes out good looking. I hate to see the burned off paint.
 
Try Cast Blast. I did my manifold and vertical exhaust. So far no problem. They have Hi temp of regular. The silver vertical exhaust in the photo was first done with Hi temp ceramic but it didn't fair well. It is now painted with Cast Blast.
