Engine Paint Possible Issue?

Hello All,

Amung other issues i have with this engine the paint is no different, please see attached picture, I sent the engine to what I thought was a good machiest to rebuild and not only have i been trying to get the thing started for weeks but I recently discovered by a friend of mine that the paint used by the shop that did the work was simply spray can enamel gloss black not high temp. So now what can i do? Will this be a mess? will it damadge anything? Will it burn off and i can recoat with high temp? Thanks, Scott

P.S. The shop did the work under the table to save me money, well lesson learned.

On water cooled engines all that burns off with regular paint is that on the manifold. I don't know if a air cooled engine as a whole is any hotter than water cooled, I doubt if it burns off. Although I would trust spray paint more than rattle can.

My opinion: If you are having trouble getting it started after a rebuild, you have more important issues to work out than the paint. In any event, you can expect the paint to burn off the exhaust manifold and the cylinder cooling fins in the area(s) where the exhaust manifold connects. The paint on the head and the head cooling fins is questionable in my experience. The two-cylinder air-cooled Wisconsin engine I painted in the past with automotive paint had an aluminum head so I didn't paint that part at all.

Yeah I'm actually on another forum sorting out the other issues and I'm pretty close to resolving the engine issues and paint is next before I drop it back in, just thought I would look ahead a little.

I wouldn't worry too much about the paint. It's not going to do any harm and won't make any kind of mess. Burning off in the areas I mentioned is considered common. That would also happen with any paint applied on a new engine direct from the factory. They wouldn't be using any special high temp paint. As far as the heads are concerned, they're going to be mostly covered by air shrouds anyway, along with the cyls, aren't they? At least they are on my 4 cyl Wisconsin VE4D. I wouldn't try and apply any paint over the existing - that could make a mess with wrinkling of the film, especially if it's a lacquer over enamel. A proper re-paint would involve completely stripping the existing paint.

Good luck in getting it running properly. Is that a hydraulic pump it's driving? Does it go in a skid-steer?
