cleaning a serial tag

Not quite your problem but we had a serial tag where most of the black had disappeared. My son, an architect, used a very fine black permanent ink pen and the finished product looks just like the original, apart from some roughness on the number flat (at least shows it was the original tag). It was finished with two coats of clear enamel sprayed on and then re-riveted back onto the seat support.

We cleaned over-sprayed red paint from the one for our Farmall Regular by soaking it in mineral spirits and brushing it very lightly with a fine brass brush to score the unwanted over-sprayed paint. Next he would soak it some more and scrub it lightly with a nylon brush.

Then I did some finer work by carefully scraping paint loose with a fine tipped Exacto knife.

Worked pretty well... we went from totally covered by red paint to quite readable (does still have some red flecks on it - but way better than it was when we started).
