Cleaning a surface prepaint

I am touching up some rusty spots on my horse trailers to stop the rust. Some will be spray can and some will be brushed. Nothing fancy, just trying to stop the rust.

Question. What do I use to clean the surface, after sanding to prep before paint.

I used to use prepsol when I was young but the stores look at me funny when I ask for it.

I like acetone on a good rag with no strings or fuzzies. Sometimes just plain water(If pitted and can't get rust out of pits) followed quickly by acetone to absorb the water.
 
Ask for wax and grease remover from your paint supplier. Prep sol was one, also finyl wash and pre cleano. I use an rm product called 900. Wear disposable nitrile gloves. Most all paint chemicals are readily absorbed directly thru the skin.
 
If you want to get the rust off, the very best thing I have found is Miriatic Acid. Believe me it will take the rust off, and right now. The metal will be so rust free that when you rinse the acid off with water, the metal will begin to rust immediately. So be ready to spray on a primer, or some paint.

I agree with Phil for those spot situations. I add the additional step of mixing a little baking soda with water and quickly washing the area and then rinsing with water, and then quickly drying with compressed air. Then prime right away.

As far as wax and grease removers, they are not all created equal. I recommend RM pre-Kleano 900. This is a great product for cleaning prior to primer/paint.
