Rattle can paint question

Going to paint the M with 2150 rattle cans, its a working tractor and I don't need a $1,000 paint job, i'll save that for the MTA. Anyway, I was going to spray can primer then a few coats with 2150 cans. How long until I can use the tractor? I'm afraid that as I step up on the tractor im going to rub the paint off of the platform, axle housings, etc...How long before it's cured enough to walk on? thanks, ~Anthony

I would use an epoxy primer after you power wash or steam clean it. You can buy New Holland's acrylic enamel for about $80.00 for a gallon. I used their NH blue on my garden tractor. I used Duponts acrylic enamel on the light color. Hal
PS: Use a spray gun it will put paint places where a rattle can can't.

The rattle can paint should be dry enough to use in 24 hours. I think you will have a difficult time spraying the tractor with rattle can paint. It's hard spraying large areas because the cans don't put out enough volume of paint you can apply it fast enough not to have lap marks. With a twenty dollar Harbor Freight paint sprayer the job would be so much easier. You could then use SherKem enamel from Sherwin Williams that would hold up better for you.

Stephen, I looked into spraying my Fergy as a "one-time" project: the problem isn't the twenty-dollar Harbor Freight sprayer, it's the three hundred (or more) dollar compressor that's big enough, and good enough, to do the job.

Renting a compressor may be an option for some folks, but I can't get stuff done that fast!

the rattle can paint is probably a modified enamel. does not have a hardener in the mix. it takes time for the solvents to flash off and get a good dry. after you paint, let it sit about a day in the shed, then pull it out in the sun and let it get good and hot. pull it back in at night so you dont get dew on the paint. couple 3 or 4 days of that will firm it up. use your thumb nail in an out of the way spot to check how it is drying.

You still won't get anywhere near the durability of using a paint with hardener though.

I could write extensively on the use or "can" spray paint but it sounds like that is the only method you are considering. As for the "drying time" to the touch, depending on brand and amount of actual paint you apply, it will be several minutes to the touch and AT LEAST 24+ hours to walk on. You will get the best coverage and finish if you buy one that comes with a FAN SPRAY. The best quality of "can" spray wold be Rustoleum Industrial. It is a better grade and they claim it is fast drying. haven't seen the difference in dry time myself. The WalMart primer is cheapest at $1.39 and the the Rustoleum self-etching primer will give best adherence.
