primer for acrylic enamel

If you have the item you're planning on painting I would either power wash it or steam clean it to get off all the dirt and grease. Sand any rusty places. I would use an epoxy primer. If you're going to use any hardener you need a supplied air system. You do not want to breathe any of that stuff. I like to use a surface over the primer. I always liked Primeez sold by Napa. It may be made by Martin Senour. It's also sandable. It's thinned with lacquer thinner. It also dries very quick. Hal
 
2 part epoxy primer is compatible with about everything. As to covering it with surfacer, I prefer urethane surfacer because the lacquer shrinks and can expose scratches after topcoating.
