thinning Rust-oleum paint

I have two quart cans of Rust-oleum paint. I thought I would use them on two different loaders.
I would like to know what to thin them with to get it thru a HVLP gun that has either a 1.5 or a 1.8 tip. Or will it work without thinning? I have not used this type of gun before.Thank you

If it is a topcoat 1.3-1.5 is ok, 1.8 is more for thick primers, it won't leave a smooth surface. I haven't used alkyd enamel so I can't tell you how to thin it.

If it were me I would try to spray it without thinning it. If it doesn't spray well thin it as little as possible with naphtha. The more you thin it the more prone it is to run and if it sprays actually wet tends to screw up the sheen. It also takes longer to dry.

If thinning instructions are not already on the can label, you should <a href="http://rustoleum.com/~/media/DigitalEncyclopedia/Documents/RustoleumUSA/TDS/English/CBG/Stops%20Rust/SRT-02_0213_Stops%20Rust%20Enamel%20Brush_TDS.ashx">check with the manufacturer</a>

A neighbor told me he thinned his paint for tractors with pump gas. Said he had been doing it for years and never had a problem. Probly something to it as my dad told of keeping his Model T Ford painted up using gas for a thinner. That would have been in the mid 1920's
