Which paint to use

I have a 1957 Farmall 350 row crop tractor. The plan is to restore the tractor this coming winter for show purposes only. I want this tractor to shine like a high quality diamond. My question is what kind of paint, brand of paint along with paint codes should I use?

CaseIH 2150 crosses to PPG/Dupont 71310/96766 Urethane. The "inexpensive" acrylic urethane will cost you about $150/gallon, the higher priced about double that. You also need epoxy primer and surfacer to get a smooth finish to add to that. Urethane contains isocyanates in the hardener which requires supplied air to protect your lungs -- $3-$500. 2150 has sort of an orange tint, you might want the dealer to put in maybe 25% less orange and 25% more red for PPG Omni. I do that to mine, it helps some, I am used to that color and I don't agree with those who say it needs to be darker. I have not used the high dollar stuff nor DuPont 96766, so I can't speak for the color. Some on this forum will probably say that the CaseIH dealer acrylic modified IH 2150 is good enough. Perhaps, but it does not have the quality of urethane. On the other hand if the tractor is inside all the time except for shows maybe so. My opinion is if you are totally restoring the 350, use quality paint.

CNKS pretty much covered it. I always tell guys if its your first time doing a restoration and 1st time spraying paint use the stuff from CIH or JD etc. Once you move to the higher end auto paint the price goes up drastically. Another option is to do all the prep work and get it ready for painting. Then find an auto painter willing to do a side job and paint it your shop.
